PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College first-year goalkeeper
Mallory Symons was named the Northwest Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Symons made 11 saves in 179 minutes across two conference games to earn her first career NWC weekly award.
Symons made her first collegiate start Saturday against defending NWC co-champion Pacific Lutheran University and played all 90 minutes of a 1-1 tie. She made six saves after the Lutes took the lead on an own goal 47 seconds into the game. In the 84th minute, she dove to her left and pushed a Jillian Retzlaff shot out for a corner kick. Pacific Lutheran took four shots and three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes but did not score. The tie was Lewis & Clark's first result against the Lutes since a 0-0 draw on Nov. 6, 2022, and ended a six-game losing streak in the series.
On Sunday, Symons played the final 89 minutes of a 2-1 loss to defending NWC co-champion University of Puget Sound. She made five saves, including four in the second half. Her stops in the 76th and 83rd minutes preserved a 1-1 tie. Symons added her fifth save in the 88th minute before the Loggers scored the deciding goal on the ensuing corner kick. Puget Sound outshot Lewis & Clark 17-2 and went nearly 83 minutes between goals.
Symons entered the weekend with three saves in 13 minutes of collegiate play. She now has 14 saves in 192 minutes.
Lewis & Clark hosts George Fox University at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Griswold Stadium.
