Late Goal Decides Women’s Soccer Game Against Puget Sound

Rowan Levandoski scored her second goal of the season, and Mallory Symons made five saves.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's soccer tied the game in the second half before the University of Puget Sound scored with less than two minutes remaining to defeat the River Otters 2-1 in a Northwest Conference game Sunday at Griswold Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Senior Rowan Levandoski scored her second goal of the season in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1-1. First-year goalkeeper Mallory Symons made five saves, including four after halftime, while playing the final 89 minutes.
 
Puget Sound took the lead five minutes and 15 seconds into the game when Madi Jarzynka scored an unassisted goal.
 
Symons made her first save at 24:02 on a shot from Short. Short attempted two more shots over the next five minutes, and Lewis & Clark blocked both. The Loggers outshot the River Otters 9-0 in the first half and earned two corner kicks, but the score stayed 1-0 at halftime.
 
Symons made her second save in the 60th minute, stopping another attempt from Short to keep the deficit at one goal.
 
Levandoski tied the game at 64:37 on Lewis & Clark's first shot. A cross deflected to the top of the penalty area, where Levandoski struck the ball on her first touch through traffic and inside the far post.
 
Symons stopped Short again in the 76th minute and denied Jarzynka in the 83rd minute to preserve the tie. First-year Olivia Melanson recorded the River Otters' second shot in the 88th minute, sending her attempt wide right.
 
Puget Sound regained the lead less than a minute after Melanson's attempt. Symons saved a shot from Jarzynka at 87:42, and the Loggers earned a corner kick five seconds later. Charlotte Willis sent the corner to the back post, where Short headed it down and inside the post at 88:08.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Symons made four of her five saves in the second half. Three of her saves came on shots from Short, who led all players with eight shots.
  • Puget Sound finished with a 17-2 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Loggers took all six corner kicks in the game.
  • Lewis & Clark held NWC-leading Puget Sound without a goal for nearly 83 minutes between the Loggers' two scores.
