Women's Soccer Earns Tie Against Lutes

Junior Ava Lazzara scored her first collegiate goal

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's soccer junior Ava Lazzara scored her first collegiate goal and first year goalie Mallory Symons made six saves in her first collegiate start, to lead the River Otters to a 1-1 tie against Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 1, Pacific Lutheran 1
(Lewis & Clark 2-4-3, Northwest Conference 2-3-1)
(PLU 4-2-3, NWC 2-1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The River Otters found themselves behind 1-0 early, but fought back to snap a six-game losing streak against the Lutes.

Symons, who had played 13 collegiate minutes prior to Saturday, was excellent in her first collegiate start. She stopped the final six shots she faced of the contest to help Lewis & Clark have time to come back and then hold on to a key draw.

Lazzara had an eventful afternoon. The junior center back attempted to head away a Lutes free kick in the first minute of play but it ended up going off her head and into the Otts goal. She redeemed herself in the 50thminute when she attacked a Meredith Horne free kick to score her first collegiate goal and tie the game at 1-1.

The assist marked the first collegiate point and assist of Horne's career.

PLU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first minute when they drew a foul and scored an own goal just 47 seconds into the contest.

Lewis & Clark would right the ship and head into halftime down 1-0 thanks to several key saves from Symons.

The River Otters jumped all over the Lutes to start the second half. Senior Grace Smith drew a foul just over 30 yards from goal. Horne stepped up and laced a ball to the back post where Lazzara was able to head it back across goal and just off the hand of the keeper and in. The goal tied the game up at 49:59.

Pacific Lutheran would come up with several chances to retake the lead but Lewis & Clark stood tough. Symons made her best save of the game in the 84th minute when she dove to her left and parried a Jillian Retzlaff shot out for a corner. The Lutes posted three corner kicks and four shots in the final 10 minutes but couldn't find a goal against the Lewis & Clark defense.
