CLAREMONT, Calif.—Despite seven saves from senior keeper Micaiah Garan, Lewis & Clark College men's soccer fell 2-0 to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in their 2026 season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The River Otters held the Stags off the board for over 30 minutes and had a phenomenal chance to tie the game in the final 15 minutes, before the hosts added a late tally to pull away. 
 
Garan opened his senior campaign with a strong performance. He made three saves in the first half and tacked on four more in the second. 
 
Junior Sam London, senior Zidane Indarta and sophomore Raff Ladd notched Lewis & Clark's three shots. London posted the team's lone shot on target and Indarta came the closest to opening the scoring in the 2026 season. 
 
Luke Allen and Matteo Quadrini each scored in the final 15 minutes of a half for the Stags - who posted their third win in six days to open the season. First year Axel Jimenez notched his second-consecutive shutout with one save. 
 
CMS came out strong to start the contest with a corner kick and a shot that went wide in the opening two minutes. They forced Garan to made a double save just 10 minutes in and added three more shots to bring their total to six within the first 25 minutes. 
 
London recorded Lewis & Clark's first shot of the season at the 8:12 mark. The junior dribbled through two defenders and drew a foul 15-yards outside the box. He whipped a cross in that made its way all the way to Jimenez who managed to corral it and hold on. 
 
The hosts grabbed the lead in the 34^th minute. After the Stags were able to clear away a Lewis & Clark corner, they quickly counter attacked to bring the ball across midfield. Sean Lee slipped a pass behind the River Otters defense and Allen chipped a shot over a sliding Garan to make it 1-0 at 33:53. 
 
Indarta nearly tied the game with just under 13:30 to play. After sophomore Alex Woods drew a free kick and a yellow card at midfield, sophomore Parker Mills sent the ball to the edge of the box. The ball pinged around and fell to Indarata 25-yards out, the senior sent a left-footed line drive that beat the keeper but pinged off the crossbar to keep the score 1-0. 
 
The Stags added their second goal with just over 10 minutes to play. Collin Ross lifted a cross that bounced high off a Lewis & Clark defender. Garan went up to catch the ball but had it dislodged by Matteo Quadrini and the Stags center forward was able to turn and shoot it past a Lewis & Clark defender for a 2-0 edge with 10:06 to play. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• The hosts held a 16-3 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. 
• First year Avi Rajbhandari (71 minutes) made his first collegiate start and his collegiate debut in the contest. Rajbhandari and junior Trevor Koo each played in the Lewis & Clark football team's win over the University of Puget Sound on Saturday before traveling down to California for today's game.  
• Sunday's meeting was the first contest between the two programs since Lewis & Clark returned to varsity status in 2022. CMS is off to a strong start to the season – including earning a 1-0 win over #2 Trinity University (Texas) on Friday night. 
• First years Eliot Shepard, Jet Finley and Darragh Mahoney all made their collegiate debuts in the contest. Junior Eli Kraft made his NCAA and collegiate soccer debut after playing two years of basketball at Olympic College.
• Lewis & Clark had 22 players appear in their season opener. Senior center back Emmett Olson led all field players with 77 minutes played.  

WHO'S NEXT 
 
Lewis & Clark will have a tight turnaround, as they take on former NCAA DII team Azusa Pacific University on Monday at 11 a.m. The Cougars are in their first year in NCAA DIII and off to a 1-1 start to the season.
