Women’s Soccer Falls to Pacific in Conference Opener

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's soccer was shut out by Pacific University on Friday night in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Sophomore Riley Yip led all players in shots with four and one shot on goal.
 
Lucia Barrón Núñez played all 90 minutes in goal for the River Otters. The first-year recorded three saves. 
 
The Boxers opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the tenth minute by Rissalyn Hara that found the left corner of the net.
 
Lewis & Clark had a chance to equalize in the 21st minute. Senior Grace Smith stepped to the penalty spot, but Pacific goalkeeper Jaelynn Moo saved the attempt to preserve the Boxers' 1-0 lead.
 
Yip and Smith continued to create chances for Lewis & Clark in the first half. Yip sent a shot wide in the 22nd minute, and Smith had an attempt blocked at 35:52. Yip fired wide again less than 30 seconds later before the River Otters earned a corner kick at 36:31. Smith and senior Mischa Vanek each put a shot on goal before halftime as Lewis & Clark held a 5-4 advantage in shots while trailing 1-0.
 
The River Otters generated six shots after halftime as they searched for the tying goal. Yip forced a save in the 51st minute, and senior Rowan Levandoski put another shot on target at 54:16. Pacific reserve goalkeeper Madeleine Gomez stopped both attempts.
 
In the 64th minute, Barrón Núñez came off her line to defend Elizabeth Brisson on the left side of the goal. From only a few yards away, Brisson launched a head-high shot that Barrón Núñez turned away. Four minutes later, Brisson and Barrón Núñez faced off again. As Brisson attacked down the left, the keeper dove to her right in an attempt to block the shot, but Brisson fired wide of the post. 
 
With less than two minutes left in the game, Pacific's Marissa Agraz scored her first career goal to secure the win for the Boxers. 
  
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • First-year Olivia Melanson earned her first collegiate start and played 81 minutes in her NWC debut, recording one shot.
  • Smith recorded three shots, including one on goal, and played all 90 minutes.
  • The River Otters outshot Pacific 11-10 and registered four shots on goal. Levandoski, Vanek, Smith, and Yip notched one each.
