Women’s Soccer Shuts Out George Fox for First Win of Season

First-year Lucia Barrón Núñez made three saves for first career shutout and win.

NEWBERG, Ore. – Sophomore Riley Yip scored in the 53rd minute to lift Lewis & Clark College women's soccer to a 1-0 win over George Fox University on Sunday at Austin Sports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Yip scored her first goal of the season at 52:41, with senior Rowan Levandoski providing the assist on the game's only goal.
 
First-year goalkeeper Lucia Barrón Núñez made three saves in 90 minutes to earn her first career win and shutout.
 
Lewis & Clark held a 4-1 advantage in shots during the first half. Levandoski sent a shot wide in the 12th minute, and senior Grace Smith did the same in the 18th. The River Otters had two more shots blocked late in the half, Smith's at 40:47 and Yip's at 41:43. Barrón Núñez made her lone first-half save on Lindsey Kong at 27:22, and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
 
The River Otters took the lead early in the second half. Lewis & Clark earned a corner kick at 52:10, and Yip headed Levandoski's ensuing corner into the upper-right corner of the net 31 seconds later for a 1-0 lead.
 
George Fox pushed for an equalizer over the remainder of the game. Erin Lam forced a save from Barrón Núñez at 54:59, and Maddilan Twichell tested her again in the 85th minute. Barrón Núñez stopped both attempts to preserve the shutout.
 
Lewis & Clark created another chance in the 59th minute when George Fox goalkeeper Myann Johansen saved a shot from Smith. Smith finished with a game-high three shots.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Yip's goal was her first of the season and the first game-winner of her career.
  • Levandoski recorded her second career assist.
  • Barrón Núñez earned her first career win and shutout. She has recorded 24 saves and a .800 save percentage through five games.
  • Lewis & Clark finished with a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
