Women's Soccer Secures Season-Sweep Of Bruins

Women's soccer scored multiple goals in a contest for the first time this season

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's soccer erupted for their most goals scored in a game in over two years, to earn a 3-0 home win over George Fox University on Wednesday night.Ā
Ā
THE BASICSĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark 3, George Fox 0
(Lewis & Clark 3-5-3, Northwest 3-4-1)Ā
(George Fox 1-8-1, NWC 0-7-1)Ā
Ā
HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ
Ā
Junior Kaedance Stubbs, sophomore Riley Yip and senior Mischa Vanek all scored to help Lewis & Clark earn their first home win of the season.Ā

The River Otters scored two goals in a 7:05 span of the first half to grab a 2-0 lead and then added a late tally to earn the season-sweep of George Fox.Ā
Ā
Stubbs opened the scoring in the 10thĀ minute when the River Otters executed a short-corner routine. Senior Grace Smith played the ball short to Stubbs who looked to cross the ball into the box. With the Bruins defense slow to react, Stubbs sent a low line drive towards the six-yard box – two Lewis & Clark players tried to redirect the cross but it went past both players and over the diving Bruins' keeper for a 1-0 lead at 9:41.Ā
Ā
Yip made it 2-0 in the 17thĀ minute. The sophomore turned her defender on a throw-in near midfield and raced towards goal with a slew of Bruins trailing her. Her initial shot was knocked down by the diving goalie but the ball squeezed past and Yip followed up her rebound and easily put the ball into the empty net at 16:46.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark would take their foot off the gas a bit for the rest of the half as George Fox began to grow into the game.Ā
Ā
The Bruins kept the momentum going into the second stanza and Sarah Burkes and Lindsey Kong each hit the crossbar for the visitors.Ā
Ā
First year Mallory Symons, who earned her first collegiate win in the contest, made five of her career-high seven saves in the second stanza. The first year's best save came early in the second half when she parried an Erin Lam shot up and over the bar on a shot that was destined to go just under the crossbar.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark added a key insurance goal that put the game to bed in the 87thĀ minute. Senior Iris Stutzman dribbled past a defender along the near sideline and burst into the box. She sent a cutback pass to the near post and Vanek met the pass with an immediate right-footed shot that flew past the keeper before she could react.Ā
Ā
