Women’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie at Willamette

Olivia Melanson scored in the eighth minute, and Mallory Symons made three saves.

SALEM, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College led for more than 76 minutes before Willamette University scored in the 84th minute as the teams played to a 1-1 tie in a Northwest Conference women's soccer game Saturday at Sparks Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First-year Olivia Melanson scored in the eighth minute on an assist from sophomore Riley Yip. First-year goalkeeper Mallory Symons played all 90 minutes and made three saves.
 
Yip took the game's first shot in the fifth minute, sending her attempt wide left. Just over two minutes later, she assisted on Melanson's goal at 7:10. Yip received the ball off a throw-in and dribbled past two Bearcats before finding Melanson in the box. Melanson sent a left-footed shot past Willamette goalkeeper Logan Hellyar. She attempted another shot 38 seconds later, but it went over the goal.
 
Lewis & Clark recorded four of the game's first five shots. Senior Iris Stutzman attempted a shot in the 20th minute, and junior Sophia Gill sent an attempt over the goal later that minute.
 
Symons made her first two saves on shots from Samantha Rodriguez at 24:45 and Claire Warthen at 26:46.
 
Gill put a shot on goal at 28:28, forcing Hellyar to make a save. The River Otters earned two corner kicks over the next 29 seconds and added another in the 38th minute.
 
Willamette took the first three shots after halftime and earned three corner kicks before Lewis & Clark recorded its first attempt of the second half. Junior Tatum Akimoto-Albarado shot in the 61st minute, and Melanson sent an attempt over the goal in the 63rd.
 
Symons made her third save at 66:57 on a shot from Haleigh Seeling. Warthen hit the crossbar at 70:44 and attempted another shot four seconds later, but the River Otters maintained their lead.
 
Stutzman sent Lewis & Clark's final shot wide in the 80th minute. Willamette earned a corner kick at 82:35, and Rodriguez scored an unassisted goal 41 seconds later to tie the game.
 
Neither team attempted another shot over the final six-plus minutes.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Melanson led Lewis & Clark with three shots. Stutzman and Gill attempted two apiece, while Yip and Akimoto-Albarado each recorded one.
  • Willamette outshot Lewis & Clark 12-9 and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Willamette took six corner kicks, including five in the second half. Lewis & Clark took all five of its corners before halftime.
