Vanek's First Collegiate Brace Leads Women's Soccer Past Blues

Mischa Vanek scored two goals to help women's soccer defeat Whitman for the first time in four years

PORTLAND, Ore.—Senior Mischa Vanek scored two goals 80 minutes apart, to lead Lewis & Clark College women's soccer past Whitman College 2-1.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 2, Whitman 1
(Lewis & Clark 4-6-4, Northwest Conference 4-5-2)
(Whitman 7-4-2, Northwest Conference 6-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Vanek notched her first collegiate brace to help Lewis & Clark defeat the Blues for the first time since October 2022.

The senior forward scored in the third minute and 83rd minute to move into first place on the team with four goals.

Sophomore Claire Anderson and first year Dayja Fellers each posted their first collegiate assists in the win.

First year goalie goalie Lucia Barrón Núñez made three saves on four shots to earn her third win of the season.

Lewis & Clark opened the scoring just 2:33 into the contest. Sophomore Kaedance Stubbs sent a throw in towards the box and Fellers headed the ball in Vanek's direction. Vanek's first touch took her past a defender and she raced towards the goal. The senior sent a tight-angled shot just inside the near post to make it 1-0.

Whitman's Erisa Baba sent several shots on target in the final five minutes of the half but Barrón Núñez was able to make the saves and keep the game 1-0 at halftime.

The visitors tied the game in the 60th minute on a penalty kick. The River Otters were whistled for a foul at the edge of the box and Avery Cohen stepped up and sent the goalie the wrong way for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Lewis & Clark immediately grabbed the momentum back as they created several strong chances. Sophomore Riley Yip and Anderson posted back-to-back shots on goal within a two-minute span. Senior Grace Smith rattled the crossbar with a shot minutes later and junior Tatum Akimoto-Albarado sent a shot just high from inside the box.

The River Otters grabbed the lead in the 83rd minute. Vanek dribbled into the box and forced a corner kick. Anderson sent a line drive corner to the back post and Vanek headed it inside the near post for a 2-1 advantage at 82:39.

The Blues would create two corner kicks and a free kick in the waning minute but failed to record a shot on goal.
