Women’s Soccer Posts Scoreless Draw Against Whitworth

The River Otters outshot the Pirates 16-5 and recorded six shots on goal.

PORTLAND, Ore.— Lewis & Clark women's soccer extended their home unbeaten streak to three games in a row, with a 0-0 draw against Whitworth on Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 0, Whitworth 0
(Lewis & Clark 4-6-5, Northwest Conference 4-5-3)
(Whitworth 3-8-1, Northwest Conference 2-7-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Seniors Mischa Vanek and Grace Smith led the River Otters' offence. Vanek recorded five shots, with two on target in her 71 minutes of playing time. Smith added two shots on goal and registered four total shots.

Lucia Barrón Núñez played the full 90 minutes in goal for Lewis & Clark. The first-year tallied two saves, her 40th and 41st of the season, to post her third shutout of the season.

With 40 minutes left in the second half, Vanek intercepted a misguided pass by Whitworth keeper Karlee Roderick. Vanek attempted a low left-footed shot, forcing Roderick to dive to her right and knock it away. Sophomore Riley Yip had a chance at a second-chance shot but her shot flew just to the left of the goal.

In the 79th minute, Iris Stutzman took control of the ball after a goal kick by Whitworth. The senior charged down the right flank and sent a cross into the box to find junior Tatum Akimoto-Albarado. Aiming for the top left of the goal, Akimoto-Albarado fired a one-touch shot that missed high and wide.

The Pirates also created several scoring opportunities, but only had two shots on goal. With 18 minutes left in the first half, Whitworth's Emma Ellard sent a left-footed shot off the crossbar.

In the last seven minutes, Whitworth had three corner kicks, but failed to capitalize on any of them. On the final two corner kicks, Barrón Núñez jumped to claim the ball before the Pirates could get a shot off.
