HILLSBORO, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's swimming senior Zach Martin and softball senior Madison Scroggins were named Northwest Conference First Team Scholar-Athletes, the NWC league office announced on Friday afternoon. 
 
Zach Martin – Men's Swimming – Sr. – Claremont, Calif. 
 
Martin made the most of his four years on campus as a swimmer and a member of the music community on campus. In the pool, he earned multiple All-Conference awards as an individual every year and racked up 13 total All-Conference awards. Martin set the program record in the 200 Freestyle as a sophomore – breaking the program record that had stood for 36 years. As a junior, he swam the anchor leg of the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay to help Lewis & Clark take first place and earn the men's program's their first victory in an NWC relay since 1989. He also added a career-best second-place finish at an NWC Championship Meet in the 200 Free during his junior campaign. Martin closed out his career as a member of the fastest relay team in all five relays and ranked in the top-10 in program history in the: 200 Free (2^nd), 100 Free (4^th), 50 Free (6^th) and 100 Breaststroke (7^th).
 
Zach graduated this May with a degree in Music and a minor in Computer Science and a 3.98 cumulative GPA. He was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team three times and the NWC Scholar-Athlete Team all four years. He served as the assistant director of the Choir Community Chorale, the section leader of Cappella Nova Bass, the president of the Water Polo Club and a member of the St. James Luther Choral Scholar. Martin also spent time as a lifeguard at the Lewis & Clark pool during open swim hours. Since graduating, he has stayed involved in the swimming world by coaching with the Lake Oswego Water Polo Club.

His leadership and dedication to fostering an inclusive and positive team culture has had a lasting impact on our program. Zach is extremely deserving of this award."
 
Madison Scroggins – Softball – Sr. – Antelope, Calif. 
 
Scroggins excelled on the diamond, the classroom and her extracurriculars throughout her time at Lewis & Clark. She helped the softball program put together their best four-year run in school history. The River Otters senior class set a new program-record with 106 wins (106-64) and made three-straight Northwest Conference Tournament appearances and the program's first-ever NCAA DIII Tournament appearance in 2025. Lewis & Clark finished .500 or better in all four seasons and broke the program record for overall wins (31) and conference wins (21) multiple times. Scroggins started in left field for all four years and earned All-Conference honors as a junior (Second Team) and senior (First Team). She ranks top-20 in program history in career: games played (4^th), runs (6^th), hits (7^th), starts (8^th) on-base percentage (9^th), at-bats (9^th), stolen bases (11^th), runs batted in (t-16^th). 
 
Scroggins graduated in May with a degree in Biology with a minor in Hispanic Studies and a 3.916 GPA. She graduated summa cum laude and was named a College Sports Communicatiors Academic All-District honoree three times and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar-Athlete twice. She worked with Athletic Communications and in the Athletic Training room, conducted research through a Biology Practicum focused on fruit flies, served as a grader for a biology course, and assisted faculty research involving field work and small mammal studies.
 
"Madison has been both an outstanding teammate in our softball program and an equally hard-worker behind the scenes in her classroom and labs," softball head coach Shawna Cyrus said.  "She is focused, driven and mature in all areas of her life. Madison is kind to everyone and supports her teammates with every ounce of energy she has. She has been such a stable and mature leader in our softball program and we are all better people for being around her for four years."
 
Following graduation, Scroggins will begin a position with the Sequoia National Park Service as a research technician conducting vegetation and fuel surveys. Her long-term goal is to pursue a career in conservation research as a wildlife biologist.
