Rowing Claims Two Event at Covered Bridge Regatta

W-Squad’s second varsity four and novice four place first; second varsity eight tops Pacific’s varsity entry in the afternoon session

EUGENE, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College rowing won two events Saturday at the Covered Bridge Regatta, hosted by the University of Oregon on Dexter Reservoir.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The W-Squad's second varsity four placed first in Event 1, and the novice four won Event 9. The W-Squad second varsity eight also defeated Pacific's varsity entry in the afternoon session. Conditions were sunny with a light to moderate headwind, and the water remained slow for all crews throughout the day.
 
Ten programs competed, including Lewis & Clark: the University of California Lightweights, Cal Poly Humboldt, New St. Andrews College, Pacific University, Seattle University, University of California, Davis, the University of Oregon, Washington State University and Western Washington University. The River Otters entered 10 boats across nine events.
 
The W-Squad second varsity four opened the schedule at 8:30 a.m. in Event 1. Coxswain Morgan Anderson led Sunny Greenblum at stroke, Jocelyn Brandon in three, Amber Hayes in two and Grace MacDonald in bow to a first-place finish in a four-boat B flight that included Oregon, Cal Lightweights and Seattle.
 
The men's second varsity four followed at 8:50 a.m. in Event 3. Coxswain Max Baker steered Uly Smucker at stroke, Eugene Ahoudji in three, Daniel Macha in two and Donovan Taylor in bow against a seven-boat field that included Washington State, Oregon, UC Davis, Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal Lightweights. The crew, composed primarily of novice rowers, posted a strong result against several Division I and Division II varsity entries.
 
The W-Squad varsity eight raced at 10:00 a.m. in Event 8 against Oregon and Cal Lightweights. Coxswain Ella Radvany led Sadie Meredith-Andrews at stroke, Carson Cook in seven, Sydney Case in six, Lyndsay Morris in five, Emma Wind in four, Molly Petrowitz in three, Clare Kimmel in two and Zoe Mitchell in bow. The crew narrowed the gap on Oregon and reported feeling strong and connected throughout the race.
 
The W-Squad novice four secured Lewis & Clark's second win at 10:10 a.m. in Event 9. Coxswain Fay Seirafi guided McKinley Garrett at stroke, Tori Westgate in three, Daniella Bulafu in two and Camille Bluberg in bow to a first-place finish in a two-boat B flight with Oregon.
 
The men's varsity eight competed in the A flight of Event 10 at 10:20 a.m. Coxswain Sophie Homolka directed Eliot Woods at stroke, Lewis Grimes in seven, Smucker in six, Lukas Perttula in five, Tommy Rotelli in four, Kieran Larrabee in three, Ahoudji in two and Edison Medlock in bow against seven opponents, including Washington State, UC Davis, Western Washington and Oregon. The field featured multiple programs preparing for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships.
 
The W-Squad varsity four faced a similar level of competition in the A flight of Event 11 at 12:30 p.m. alongside Pacific, Cal Lightweights and Oregon. Radvany guided Petrowitz at stroke, Wind in three, Mitchell in two and Kimmel in bow down the course.
 
The men's varsity four lined up in Event 13A at 12:50 p.m. against Seattle, Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal Lightweights, Washington State, Western Washington, UC Davis and Oregon. Homolka coxed the boat with Woods at stroke, Perttula in three, Medlock in two and Grimes in bow. Both fields included entries bound for the WIRA championships.
 
Lewis & Clark entered two boats in Event 16 at 1:30 p.m. The W-Squad pair of Cook and Carson battled for first against the Cal Lightweights double in a close race. The double of Meredith-Andrews and Morris worked through technical challenges while maintaining a competitive effort against New St. Andrews.
 
The W-Squad second varsity eight closed Lewis & Clark's day in Event 18 at 1:50 p.m. Coxswain Anderson directed Greenblum at stroke, Westgate in seven, Hayes in six, Brandon in five, Bluberg in four, Bulafu in three, MacDonald in two and Garrett in bow past Pacific's varsity entry and Oregon's B boat.

Lewis & Clark competes in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championships on Saturday, April 18, on Vancouver Lake.
