Rowing Wins 2V8+ NCRC Trophy at Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championships

W-Squad finished second overall in the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championship standings; Woods, Case and Radvany earn All-NCRC honors.

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College rowing claimed the women's 2V8+ NCRC Trophy on Saturday at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championships on Vancouver Lake. The W-Squad second varsity eight finished first ahead of the University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The regatta drew 10 programs, including Division III rivals Puget Sound, Pacific Lutheran and Pacific University. Division II entries from Cal Poly Humboldt, the University of Central Oklahoma and Western Washington University. Division I crews from the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and Gonzaga University also competed
 
Weather conditions were ideal for racing with flat water, almost no wind, temperatures in the 60s, and plenty of sunshine.
 
The River Otters entered 10 boats across nine events at the NCRC Championships on Saturday. The W-Squad second varsity eight produced Lewis & Clark's top finish of the day, winning the NCRC Trophy in 7:50.36 and holding off Puget Sound by 1.52 seconds. Junior coxswain Morgan Anderson directed sophomore Sunny Greenblum at stroke, sophomore Carmen Aaronson in seven, junior Tori Westgate in six, senior Jocelyn Brandon in five, sophomore Amber Hayes in four, sophomore McKinley Garrett in three, sophomore Grace MacDonald in two and first-year Daniella Bulafu in bow down the 2,000-meter course. Pacific Lutheran finished in third.
 
In the final Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championship standings, the W-Squad finished second with 18 total points. Puget Sound won with 22 points between the NCRC and Judy McMullan Trophies. Pacific Lutheran finished a close third with 17 points, and Pacific finished fourth with nine points.
 
The men's varsity eight opened Lewis & Clark's day in the Rainier Cup. Senior coxswain Sophie Homolka led senior Eliot Woods at stroke, junior Lewis Grimes in seven, first-year Uly Smucker in six, first-year Lukas Perttula in five, senior Tommy Rotelli in four, junior Kieran Larrabee in three, sophomore Daniel Macha in two and first-year Edison Medlock in bow. The crew placed fourth in 6:54.94 behind Oregon, Western Washington and Cal Poly Humboldt in a five-boat field.
 
The W-Squad varsity eight raced for the Judy McMullan Trophy. Senior coxswain Ella Radvany guided senior Sadie Meredith-Andrews at stroke, senior Carson Cook in seven, senior Sydney Case in six, senior Lyndsay Morris in five, senior Emma Wind in four, first-year Molly Petrowitz in three, sophomore Clare Kimmel in two and senior Zoe Mitchell in bow to a third-place finish in 7:27.81. Puget Sound won the event in 7:06.09, followed by Pacific Lutheran at 7:14.48.
 
The men's novice four lined up for the Joshua Adam Cup. Sophomore coxswain Max Baker directed Medlock at stroke, Perttula in three, Smucker in two and first-year Eugene Ahoudji in bow. The crew finished fifth in 8:11.59 behind Western Washington, Puget Sound, Oregon and Cal Poly Humboldt.
 
The men's varsity four raced for the NCRC Trophy. Homolka coxed Woods at stroke, Rotelli in three, Jackson in two and Grimes in bow to a fourth-place finish in 7:41.14 behind Oregon (7:08.38), Western Washington (7:13.74) and Cal Poly Humboldt (7:15.59).
 
Lewis & Clark entered two crews in the women's varsity four for the Keith Buckley Trophy. Radvany coxed Petrowitz at stroke, Wind in three, Kimmel in two and Mitchell in bow. First -year Fay Seirafi coxed Greenblum at stroke, Brandon in three, Hayes in two and Aaronson in bow. The River Otters finished third in 8:16.56 and fifth in 8:38.93 in a seven-boat field won by Pacific Lutheran in 7:57.81.
 
The men's junior varsity four raced at 1:20 p.m. in Event 18. Baker coxed Jackson at stroke, Ahoudji in three, Larrabee in two and Macha in bow to a fourth-place finish in 8:19.55 behind Oregon, Western Washington and Cal Poly Humboldt.
 
The W-Squad double of Cook and Case placed third at 1:30 p.m. in Event 20, crossing in 9:08.60 behind Puget Sound's 8:30.90 and Pacific Lutheran's 8:46.07.
 
The W-Squad pair of Meredith-Andrews and Morris closed Lewis & Clark's schedule at 1:40 p.m. in Event 21, placing fifth in a field that included three Cal Poly Humboldt entries.
 
Senior Eliot Woods earned All-NCRC Men's Team honors, while seniors Sydney Case and Ella Radvany were named to the All-NCRC Women's Team.

Lewis & Clark competes at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Sacramento, California.
