PORTLAND, Ore.āSenior ace
Maggie O'Leary threw her third-consecutive shutout and
Cami Restagno and
Makena Dahir each hit home runs, to help Lewis & Clark College softball earn a split with Pacific University on Saturday.Ā
Ā
THE BASICSĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark 8, Pacific 0 (6 Innings)
Pacific 5, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 24-14, Northwest Conference 19-7)
(Pacific 15-20, NWC 10-15)Ā
Ā
HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ
Ā
O'Leary held the Boxers to one hit in game one, to help Lewis & Clark extend their NCAA-leading home winning streak to 30 games in a row. The Boxers used a strong pitching performance from junior Alissa Hermansen and three runs in the top of the seventh inning, to snap Lewis & Clark's streak and keep their playoff hopes alive (at least momentarily).Ā
Ā
GAME ONE RECAPĀ
Ā
Ā O'Leary outdueled Pacific ace Kiara Baba and the River Otters took advantage of four Boxers errors to claim the mercy-rule win.Ā
Ā
The River Otters ace allowed one baserunner all game, a leadoff double in the fourth inning, and struck out six over six innings. O'Leary needed just 79 pitches to post her third-straight shutout and extend her scoreless streak to 20.2 innings pitched.Ā
Ā
Restagno came through with the big hit of the contest for Lewis & Clark. The senior first baseman hit her second home run of the year, a three-run shot, to extend the lead to 7-0 in the sixth.Ā
Ā
Seniors
Madison Scroggins and
Lacey Marglin each added two hits apiece. Scroggins went 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Marglin added two hits in three at-bats, a run scored and a diving catch in center field.Ā
Ā
Seniors
Gina Ozuna and
Emily Patton each recorded a base hit, a run scored and an RBI. Ozuna finished with a line of 1-1 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second. Dahir (single) and Ozuna (walk) both reached to open the frame. After a strikeout for the first out, Restagno grounded a ball to the third baseman who tagged third and threw to first to try to record an inning-ending double play. The ball skipped past the first baseman on the throw to allow Ozuna to race to third. Senior
McKenna Zehnder made it 1-0 with a two-out RBI single to right field.
Ā
The River Otters took advantage of two more Pacific errors in the third to make it 4-0. Marglin led off with a single to left and raced to third base when the Boxers threw away a Scroggins sac bunt. With runners on the corners and one down, Patton singled through the middle to plate Marglin. Dahir struck out swinging but the ball got away from the catcher and the throw to first base was dropped - allowing Dahir to reach and Scroggins to come home for a 3-0 lead. Ozuna extended the lead to 4-0 with a suicide squeeze bunt that plated Patton.Ā
Ā
Abby Surowiec led off the top of the fourth with a double to center but O'Leary recorded a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Boxers off the board.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark tacked on four runs in the sixth to earn the mercy-rule win. Ozuna led off the inning with a single and first year
Cici Fortuno reached when Pacific couldn't handle her sac bunt. Restagno made Pacific pay with a three-run homer over the left-field wall to push the lead to 7-0. First year
Kara Kahahawai greeted reliever Karlie Espinoza with a triple into the corner in right field. With two down, Scroggins looped a single down the left-field line to score Kahahawai and close out the game.Ā
Ā
GAME TWOĀ
Ā
Hermansen kept Lewis & Clark off-balance all game long and the Boxers took advantage of Lewis & Clark defensive miscues to earn the win.Ā
Ā
Hermansen held Lewis & Clark to six hits, one walk and one run over seven innings and tacked on four hits.Ā
Ā
River Otters senior
Charlize Pope took the loss after scattering three hits, two walks and two runs (one earned) over 3.1 innings pitched. Junior
Ryan Jurischk came on in relief and allowed five hits, one walk and three runs (two earned). Jurischk tacked on two strikeouts.Ā
Ā
Dahir and junior
Harper Campanella led the offense for Lewis & Clark. Dahir hit her ninth home run of the season in the sixth inning and Campanella recorded a pinch-hit single in the seventh.Ā
Ā
Pacific used small-ball to take a 1-0 lead in the second. The first two batters reached on a walk and a single and Kimberly Ray put down a sac bunt to move both runners up 60 feet. Ava Hlavacek gave the Boxers the lead with a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 advantage.Ā
Ā
The visitors loaded the bases in the fourth on a single, walk and an error and KJ Gardenhire made it 2-0 with a bases-loaded walk. Jurischk would retire the next batter with a groundout to third to leave the bases stranded.Ā
Ā
Dahir cut the deficit in half to start the bottom of the sixth inning, when she lined a home run to right-center field to tie Campanella for the team lead in home runs.Ā
Ā
Pacific added three huge insurance runs in the seventh on five hits (two with two outs) and a River Otters error.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark would put two runners on with two down, but Hermansen induced a fly out to right field to leave the game-tying run in the on-deck circle.Ā
Ā
