Men’s Tennis Tops Puget Sound

Four River Otters went 2-0 as Lewis & Clark swept doubles and won five of six singles matches.

TACOMA, Wash. -- Lewis & Clark College men's tennis defeated the University of Puget Sound 6-1 in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at the Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Four River Otters went 2-0 on the day, as seniors Wade McDermott, Kai Wills and Spencer Loucks, along with junior Noah Sutin, each won in doubles and singles to lead Lewis & Clark to its sixth conference victory.
 
Lewis & Clark opened the match by sweeping the doubles round to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Arnav Bishnoi and McDermott secured the first result at No. 3 with a 6-1 win over Sam Lowery and Vincent Unpingco. Loucks and first-year Kaden Sigurdsson followed at No. 2 with a 6-2 victory over Tyler Blixt and Reef Gelder. Sutin and Wills completed the sweep at No. 1 with a 6-3 win against Jason Rowe and Jackson Stumpf.
 
Lewis & Clark won five of six singles matches. Junior Bridger Galyardt recorded the first singles point at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Blixt. McDermott followed at No. 4 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Gelder to extend the lead to 3-0.
 
Wills clinched the match at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Unpingco. Loucks added a victory at No. 5, defeating Lowery 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to make it 5-0.
 
Puget Sound earned its lone point at No. 1, where Rowe defeated Sigurdsson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in one of two three-set matches.
 
Sutin closed the afternoon at No. 2 with a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) win over Stumpf. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Sutin rallied to win the second set and secured the match in a super tiebreaker to seal the 6-1 final.

BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Sutin has won back-to-back three-set matches to improve to 8-0 at No.2 singles.
  • Bishnoi and McDermott moved to 6-1 in the Northwest Conference in doubles play and 4-0 at No. 3.
  • Sutin and Wills improved to 6-2 in NWC matches at No.1 doubles.
