Men’s Tennis Cruises Past Willamette

Four River Otters go perfect as team captures five of six singles matches.

SALEM, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College men's tennis defeated Willamette University 6-1 in Northwest Conference play on Sunday in Salem.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Four River Otters went 2-0 on the day, as senior Wade McDermott, junior Noah Sutin, sophomore Arnav Bishnoi and first-year Kaden Sigurdsson each earned wins in doubles and singles to lead Lewis & Clark to its seventh conference victory.

Lewis & Clark opened the match by sweeping doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Spencer Loucks and Sigurdsson secured the first result at No. 2 with a 6-1 win over Luca Casano and Sohnosuke Sakaguchi. Senior Kai Wills and Sutin followed at No. 1 with a 6-2 victory over AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder. McDermott and Bishnoi completed the sweep at No. 3 with a 7-5 win over Jake Bronson and Jack Hally.

Lewis & Clark claimed five of six singles matches. McDermott recorded the first singles point at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Casano. Sutin followed at No. 1 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Avansino to extend the lead to 3-0.

Sigurdsson earned a three-set win at No. 2, defeating Bronson 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Willamette picked up its lone point at No. 3, where Sakaguchi defeated Wills 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

Bishnoi closed out No. 4 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Snyder in the second three-set match of the afternoon. Junior Bridger Galyardt added the final point at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jake Freeland.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Bishnoi and McDermott extended their win streak to five matches at No. 3 doubles.
  • Sutin played No. 1 singles in Northwest Conference play for the first time this season and earned his fifth straight victory.
  • Lewis & Clark sits in third place in the NWC standings with four matches remaining. The River Otters trail Whitworth by one match and lead George Fox by 1.5 matches.
