HOW IT HAPPENED
In a rematch of two of the top three teams in the NWC last season, senior
Maggie O'Leary did not allow an earned run in 12 innings and junior
Harper Campanella drove in five runs to lead Lewis & Clark to the sweep. With the two wins, Lewis & Clark extended their NCAA DIII-leading, home-winning streak to 25 games in a row at the Huston Sports Complex.
The River Otters jumped out to early leads in both games. In game two, the Bruins managed to tie the game up with three runs in the fourth inning. The River Otters finally broke through in the tenth frame to win their fourth-straight game and stay tied atop the NWC Standings at 8-2.
GAME ONE RECAP
O'Leary held the Bruins to four hits and one unearned run and softball struck for five runs in the first two innings against George Fox ace Nicole Ledendecker.
O'Leary was dominant in the circle to improve to 8-4. She scattered three singles and one double and three walks across seven innings. O'Leary struck out five and gave up one unearned run.
Senior
Emily Patton led Lewis & Clark with a pair of hits and a run scored. Juniors
Makena Dahir and Campanella (two RBI) each posted RBI doubles. Senior
Madison Scroggins (one run) and Ancheta added a hit and an RBI apiece.
Lewis & Clark needed just four batters to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Scroggins and Patton recorded back-to-back, one-out singles to put two runners on. Campanella laced a double that bounced up and off the wall in the left-field corner to score both runners. Dahir followed with a double off the wall in left-center field to drive in pinch-runner
Meeghan Meagher.
The River Otters made it 5-0 in the second. Senior
Tallulah Sickels led off the inning with a shortstop and fellow senior
Gina Ozuna followed with a hit by pitch. After a wild pitch moved both runners up 60 feet, Ancheta ripped an RBI single past the right fielder to score Sickels. Scroggins followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0.
George Fox scored their lone run of the game in the fourth. The Bruins loaded the bases with one out on a walk, single and a dropped fly ball. Kylee Manibusan broke up the shutout bid with a sacrifice fly and O'Leary retired the next batter on a foul out to get out of the frame.
O'Leary would allow just three base runners over the final three frames to close out the win.
GAME TWO RECAP
Saturday's second game felt like a playoff contest, with the two teams going scoreless for five-straight innings, before the Lewis & Clark walk-off in the 10
th.
After not scoring since the bottom of the first, the River Otters finally got to the Bruins pitching staff in the 10
th. Sophomore
Chloe Reams worked a four-pitch walk and Ozuna beat out a bunt-single to put Sickels (the pinch-runner) at second base. Ancheta roped a 2-1 pitch into right field and Sickels dove to beat the catcher's tag, to help Lewis & Clark post their third walk-off of the season.
Ancheta posted two of softball's five hits and an RBI. Campanella came through with a three-run homer in the first inning for her third, three-run homer of the week. Scroggins (run) and Ozuna each added bunt singles.
O'Leary came on as the fourth River Otters pitcher of the contest. The senior threw five-scoreless innings of relief and scattered five hits, one walk and struck out one. Junior
Ryan Jurischk earned the start and allowed one hit, one walk and one run in 3.1 innings. First year
Kara Kahahawai threw a scoreless inning of relief and struck out one and walked one.
Lewis & Clark needed four batters to take the lead for the second-straight game. Scroggins and Patton worked back-to-back, full-count walks to put two on with one out. Campanella followed by crushing an opposite-field homer to make it 3-0.
Jurischk held the Bruins bats in check for the first three innings. She allowed just one walk and the River Otters turned a 6-4-3 double play behind her to help Jurischk face the minimum through three.
George Fox scored all three of their runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, Corine Doran hit a solo home run off Jurischk to end the Lewis & Clark pitcher's day. Senior
Charlize Pope came on and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. With the bases loaded and the game tied, Pope struck out pinch-hitter Bethany Wilkes to keep the score at 3-3.
The Bruins put together the best chance for either team to win the game in regulation in the sixth. Emily Benavidez worked a walk against O'Leary and Sami Stadtlander followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. O'Leary induced a popup to short, a shallow fly out to Dahir in right and a foul out to left to get out of the inning.
George Fox put together another rally in the ninth. With two down, Makayla Noone reached on a bunt single, stole second and took third on a throwing error. Doran hit a grounder to second and Ozuna made a nice scoop and throw to first to keep the score at 3-3.
Lewis & Clark scratched across a run in the bottom of the 10
th on Ancheta's walk-off to improve to 6-0 at home in conference games this season.
