HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore
Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson drove in five runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning. He entered in the sixth and delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 8-8.
Junior
Michael Aikawa went 1-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, two sacrifice flies and a walk. Fellow junior
Eli Steinhaus finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and first-year
Garrett Lewis added one hit and two RBI.
Sophomore
Matt Stanislavsky (2-0) earned the win with two and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. Whitman's Garen Geoghegan (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in two innings.
Whitman scored four runs in the first inning. Landon Runyan hit a three-run home run to right-center field, and Christopher Nobrega added an RBI double off Lewis & Clark starter
Calvin Martinez. The Blues extended the lead to 7-0 in the third on an RBI single by Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping, an RBI double by Nate Petz and an RBI groundout by Wyatt Miyamoto.
Junior
Felix Gibeault entered with two outs in the first and threw five innings of relief, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six.
Lewis & Clark broke through in the fourth. Aikawa walked, junior
Bret Potter singled and sophomore
Will Michelman drove in Aikawa with a single to right-center. Junior
Dylan Lee followed with an RBI single to center to score Potter and cut the deficit to 7-2.
The River Otters added four runs in the fifth to pull within 7-6. Senior
Brandon Gonzaga singled and stole second, and Steinhaus singled to move him to third. Aikawa brought Gonzaga home with a sacrifice fly. Potter singled through the right side to score Steinhaus, and Lewis capped the rally with a two-RBI single down the right-field line that scored Michelman and Potter.
Whitman's Jonah Chang doubled in a run in the sixth to push the lead to 8-6. Lewis & Clark answered in the bottom half when Gonzaga singled, Steinhaus doubled him to third and Aikawa lifted his second sacrifice fly of the game to score Gonzaga.
Shannon-Wilkerson then singled to right to score Steinhaus and tie the game.
In the eighth, Gonzaga reached on an error, and Steinhaus laid down a bunt single. Aikawa bunted to load the bases before Shannon-Wilkerson launched a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a grand slam and a 12-8 lead.
Whitman scored twice in the ninth on a solo home run by Mieszkowski-Lapping and a run scored by Petz on a balk. Potter retired the final two batters to earn his third save of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Shannon-Wilkerson finished 2-for-2 with a home run, five RBIs and a stolen base.
