HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ
Ā
Prior to the match, the River Otters celebrated seniors Landon Cronin, Spencer Loucks, Wade McDermott and Kai Wills. The quartet were all playing their second-to-last home match at the L&C Tennis Dome.
Ā
Lewis & Clark put up a stiff fight against one the top team in the NWC this year and nearly posted four victories.Ā
Ā
Whitman got off to a strong start. Hanri Luo and Guillermo Rodriguez posted a 6-1 win over McDermott and junior Bridger Galyardt at third doubles.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark countered with a win at number two doubles. Loucks and first year Kaden Sigurdsson recorded a 6-2 win over Charles Rush and Artem Manov.Ā
Ā
In the deciding match for doubles, the two teams went to a tiebreaker at first doubles. Alexander Stage and Niklas Jensen held off Wills and junior Noah Sutin 7-6 (7-4).Ā
Ā
Jensen extended the Blues lead to 2-0, when he opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sutin at second singles.Ā
Ā
The visitors added to their lead at third singles. Rodriguez defeated McDermott 6-2, 6-2 to push the lead to 3-0.Ā
Ā
Luo added a straight-set win at sixth singles, when he knocked off Galyardt 6-0, 6-0.Ā
Ā
Wills played the most competitive singles match of the day for Lewis & Clark at third singles. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Manov, he roared back with a 6-4 win in the second set. The two would go to a tiebreaker in the third set and Manov would ultimately win 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0).
Ā
Rush pushed the Whitman lead to 6-0 when he earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Loucks at fifth singles.Ā
Ā
In the final match of the day to finish, Sigurdsson went the distance with Whitman's top singles player. The first year dropped the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). He came back to win the second set 7-5. Stage bounced back and defeated Sigurdsson 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3.Ā
Ā
BY THE NUMBERSĀ
  • Lewis & Clark's senior class has combined to win 36 matches over the past four seasons.
  • Despite the loss, the River Otters clinched a spot in the four-team Northwest Conference Tournament this weekend. The River Otters own an 8-4 record and a two-game lead over George Fox University (6-6) and Pacific University (6-6). The Bruins and Boxers play on Sunday, which means only one of the two teams could potentially catch the third-place River Otters. Lewis & Clark can finish no lower than third with a win over Pacific (Saturday) or Linfield (Sunday).Ā
  • Sutin and Wills played their second tiebreaker in doubles of the week and third this season. The pair are 0-3 in doubles tiebreakers this year but sport an 11-6 record in all other doubles matches.Ā
  • Sigurdsson and Loucks went 2-0 on the weekend at second doubles and have won six of their past seven matches.Ā
WHO'S NEXTĀ
Ā
Lewis & Clark will open the final weekend of the regular season on Saturday, when they travel to take on Pacific University at 10 a.m. The River Otters defeated the Boxers 5-2 on March 7 in the first meeting between the two sides.Ā
