Softball Walks-Off Puget Sound To Earn Sweep Of The Loggers

Lewis & Clark rallied from a 7-0 deficit in game two to extend their home winning streak to 27 games

PORTLAND, Ore.—Seniors Cami Restagno and Emily Patton each posted walk-off hits, to help Lewis & Clark College softball sweep visiting University of Puget Sound on Friday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 10, Puget Sound 2 (5 Inning)
Lewis & Clark 8, Puget Sound 7
(Lewis & Clark 16-10, Northwest Conference 11-3)
(Puget Sound 4-20, NWC 2-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark used a seven-run, second inning in game one to blow the Loggers out, but would need a huge comeback in game two to keep their home winning streak alive. After falling behind 7-0 after 1.5 innings, Lewis & Clark scored four runs in their next three at-bats and four more in the bottom of the seventh, to post their fourth walk-off win in their past six home games.

Patton drove in five runs on the day and finished 5-8 with a pair of runs scored. Junior Makena Dahir added four hits, two runs, four RBI and hit her sixth home run of the season. Senior Madison Scroggins reached base on her first seven trips to the plate and finished 2-4 on the day with four walks, three runs, a triple and a hit by pitch.

Seniors Maggie O'Leary and Charlize Pope each had strong outings in the circle to limit the Loggers offensively.

GAME ONE RECAP

The River Otters used a seven-run, second inning to take control and O'Leary dominated the Puget Sound lineup to pick up her 10th win of the year.

O'Leary posted eight strikeouts across five innings and scattered six singles and two runs.

First year Kodie Ancheta finished as the lone Lewis & Clark player with multiple hits. Ancheta went 2-3 with two runs and one walk. Dahir (three RBI) and Patton (two) each finished with one hit, a run scored and multiple RBI.

Senior McKenna Zehnder opened the scoring with her first home of the season. Zehnder cleared the wall in left-center to make it 1-0 with one out in the top of the second. With two down, Ancheta worked a walk and Scroggins was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Patton followed with an RBI single to left-center to make it 2-0. The River Otters made it 3-0 on a delayed double steal that saw Scroggins race home. Lewis & Clark extended their lead to 5-0, when senior Gina Ozuna lofted a fly ball to shallow right field and two Loggers collided allowing Patton and Harper Campanella (single) to score. Dahir followed with a two-run blast well over the left-field fence to push the lead to 7-0.

Puget Sound cut the deficit to 7-2 in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out, two-run single from Macy Maxwell.

The River Otters responded with one run in the home half and two more in the fifth to walk it off. Lewis & Clark made it 8-2 in the fourth when junior Harper Campanella worked a lead-off walk, took second on a wild pitch, third on a ground out and scored on a Dahir sacrifice fly.

The hosts earned the mercy-rule win in the fifth. First year Cici Fortuno worked a pinch-hit walk with one out and and Ancheta followed with a single to move pinch-runner Lacey Marglin to third. Scroggins walked to load the bases. Patton made it 9-2 when she lofted a fly ball to left that was dropped by the left fielder and all three runners advanced. Restagno ended the game with a pinch-hit single through the right side that scored Ancheta.

GAME TWO RECAP

Puget Sound built an early 7-0 lead and Lewis & Clark needed all seven innings to earn the comeback victory.

Pope came up huge in the circle. She came on with no outs, the bases loaded and two runs already in. She would allow all three inherited runners to score but would limit the damage in the first and then just two more runs the rest of the game. Pope posted her most strikeouts in a game since her first season (nine) and scattered eight hits, two walks and two runs.

Patton put together one of her best games of the season to lead the offense. The senior shortstop went 4-5 with a run scored and three RBI. Dahir added three hits, a run scored, an RBI and a double. Scroggins chipped in two hits, two runs and a triple and Ancheta tacked on two hits, an RBI and hit by pitch.

Each of the first six Loggers batters reached in the top of the first to help the visitors build a 5-0 lead. They used a pair of two-run doubles from Elyssa Garcia and Maxwell to make it 4-0 and Brenna Flannery added an RBI single. The damage could have been even worse but senior center fielder Lola Jarrette threw out a runner trying to score for the third out of the inning.

Puget Sound added two more runs in the top of the second on a two-run double from Peyton Willing.

Lewis & Clark began their comeback in the bottom of the second. Dahir opened the frame with a single, moved to second on a groundout and third on a single from senior Tallulah Sickels. Jarrette plated Dahir with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The River Otters added two more runs in the third to cut the deficit to 7-3. Scroggins led off with a triple just over the right fielder's head and scampered home on a Patton RBI single. With two on and one out, Dahir lined a double to left-center to make it 7-3. Lewis & Clark would load the bases with two down but Puget Sound starter Alison Madia recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Lewis & Clark added one more run in the fourth. Scroggins worked a one-out walk, took second on a wild pitch and raced home on a Patton RBI single.

The game would stay at 7-4 until the bottom of the seventh inning. Ozuna opened the frame with a bunt single and Dahir laced a single to right field to bring the tying run to the plate. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one down, Fortuno came through with an pinch-hit RBI single to left field and raced to second on the throw. Restagno followed with a pinch-hit RBI single of her own to score Zehnder and cut the deficit to 7-6. Ancheta followed with an RBI single to center field that scored Sickels (pinch-runner) to tie the game. After a pitching change and a fly out, Patton ripped a single to right field and Jarrette (pinch-runner) raced home from second to seal the 8-7 win.
