Men’s Tennis Takes Down Pacific

River Otters won the doubles point, and four singles matches behind 2-0 days from McDermott, Sutin and Bishnoi.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College men's tennis defeated Pacific University 5-2 in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at the L&C Tennis Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Senior Wade McDermott, junior Noah Sutin and sophomore Arnav Bishnoi each went 2-0 to lead the River Otters past the Boxers.
 
Lewis & Clark secured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Bishnoi and McDermott earned the first result of the round with a 6-1 victory over Brandon Pham and Gaven Soriano at No. 3. Pacific's Lucas Fuhrmann and Dawson Hose responded with a 6-2 win over senior Spencer Loucks and first-year Kaden Sigurdsson at No. 2. Sutin and senior Kai Wills clinched the point with a 7-5 victory over Joshua Dela Cruz and Alexander Kinoshita at No. 1.
 
Leading 1-0 entering singles play, Lewis & Clark extended its lead at No. 4. Bishnoi defeated Fuhrmann 6-4, 6-2 for the first singles win of the afternoon. Pacific answered at No. 3, where Hose earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Wills to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sutin followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kinoshita at No. 2 to push Lewis & Clark ahead 3-1.
 
At No. 1, Sigurdsson claimed the opening set 6-4 against Dela Cruz, but Dela Cruz took the second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). Sigurdsson retired in the third set while trailing 3-0, giving Dela Cruz the match and bringing Pacific within 3-2.
 
McDermott secured the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Guillermo Arce at No. 5 to make the score 4-2. Loucks closed the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pham at No. 6 to complete the 5-2 final.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
 
  • Junior Max Furman earned a 6-2, 6-3 singles exhibition win over Gavin Soriano.  
  • Sutin improved to 5-1 in Northwest Conference singles play this season and 5-0 at No. 2 with his straight-set win.
  • Bishnoi improved to 4-0 at No. 4 singles and 4-1 in conference matches.
