Men's Golf Improves On Day Two To Finish Sixth At Willamette Valley Cup

Sophomore Mason Hill tied his best collegiate round with a 67 (-4)

SALEM, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's golf sophomore Mason Hill posted the second-lowest round in the field on Sunday (67, -4) to help the River Otters finish sixth out of 13 teams at the Willamette Valley Cup.  
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED 
 
Hill got off to a furious start to launch men's golf into second place, but the River Otters ultimately finished nine strokes off the lead. Lewis & Clark placed fourth of seven Northwest Conference teams despite posting their second-best team score of the season. 
 
Sophomore Joonho Moon followed up a strong Day One, with an even-par 71 on Sunday, to finish the tournament first on the team and tied for sixth overall. Moon put together a strong start and finish to his round on Sunday. He posted one birdie and seven pars through his first eight holes. After three-straight bogeys pushed him to +2 on the day, Moon responded with back-to-back birdies to get back to even. He would par the final four holes of the day to finish his day with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars. For the weekend, he shot a 141 (70-71) to finish at -1 overall. 
 
Sophomore Charlie Hageman wrapped up the tournament second on the team and tied for 13th overall. Hageman carded a 73 (+2) on Sunday to place third on the team. Hageman bogeyed the first hole of the day but then posted seven-straight pars. After a tough-stretch the saw him post one birdie and three bogeys in a five-hole span, the sophomore settled in and posted one birdie and four pars over his final five holes. Hageman notched two birdies and 12 pars on Day Two. He closed out the tournament with a score of 143 (+1). 
 
After a difficult Day One, Hill tied his career-low round with a four-under 67. He posted a team-high six birdies and added 10 pars and two bogeys to shave off seven strokes from his first round. Hill started the day red-hot with birdies on his second and third holes of the day and four birdies and no bogeys across his first seven holes. He would add two birdies and two bogeys across his final 11 holes to finish with a two-day total of 145 (+3). The sophomore moved up 36 spots in the field on Sunday to finish third on the team and tied for 22ndoverall. 
 
Junior Luke Blankinship placed fourth on the team on Sunday and across the two-day tournament. He clinched a tied for 39th place finish with a two-day total of 148 (+6). Blankinship carded five birdies on Sunday during an up-and-down round that saw him finish with a second-straight 74 (+3). He opened his day with a birdie but fell to +7 on the day after eight holes. The junior bounced back with four birdies and no bogeys over his final 10 holes. 
 
Sophomore Tanner Moody finished fifth on the team and tied for 46th overall. Moody improved his score by one stroke on Sunday with a 75 (+4). He started strong and finished strong on Day Two. The sophomore posted five-straight pars to begin his round but then notched all six of his bogeys over an eight-hole span. He closed out the day with two of his three birdies in a four-hole span and went -2 across his final five holes. Moody closed out the tournament with a score of 151 (+9). 
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Hill's Day Two score of 67 (-4) was second out of 79 golfers on Sunday. Linfield University's Kellen Hudson, who won the tournament with a 135 (-7), shot a 65 (-6) to lead the field on Sunday. 
  • Moon finished under par in a collegiate tournament for the second-straight tournament and second time in his career. He shot a 142 (-2) at the Pines Cup. 
  • Lewis & Clark led the entire field on par 4s average with a 4.10 (+9). They finished ninth on par 3s (3.34, +17) and eighth on par 5s (4.83, -7). 
  • The River Otters placed second in the field as a team with 35 birdies and sixth with 101 pars. 
  • Hill finished tied for first in the field on par 4s with a 3.94 average (-1). 
  • Moon placed tied for 9th in the field on par 5s with an average of 4.50 (-4). 
  • Blankinship led the team and finished tied for third overall with nine birdies. 
  • Hill's round of four-under is tied with his third round at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament when he shot a 68 (-4). It's the second-lowest round by a River Otter this season. Hageman shot a 67 (-5) in Round 2 of the same tournament. 
  • Linfield University won the team title with a two-day score of 566 (-2). Whitman College and Willamette University each finished two-strokes back with a 568 (Even).

Lewis & Clark will return to action after Spring Break. They will travel to the GFU Invitational on March 30-31 in their final tune-up before the NWC Spring Classic.
