Women’s Tennis Sweeps Puget Sound in NWC Action

Emma Loucks won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, and Lewis & Clark claimed all six singles courts in Tacoma to improve to 2-0 in conference play.

TACOMA, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis defeated the University of Puget Sound 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, winning two of three doubles matches and sweeping all six singles courts to remain unbeaten in Northwest Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The River Otters claimed the doubles point by winning two of three courts. Puget Sound recorded the first result at No. 2, where Nicole Wilson and Frances English defeated juniors Maya Curry and Emma Loucks 6-3 to give the Loggers an early edge. Senior Susanna Anand and junior Charlotte Makoni answered at No. 1, topping Kaylee Yamada and Pearl Buck 6-3 to even the round. Sophomore Anna English and first-year Alex Mignogna then clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Ginger Parker and Hannah Nejedly Welt at No. 3, sending Lewis & Clark into singles with a 1-0 lead.
 
Lewis & Clark controlled singles from the start, winning all six matches to complete the sweep. Curry posted the first singles result, defeating Wilson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 to extend the lead to 2-0. Loucks followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Meredith Friess at No. 6. Anand defeated Yamada 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 to give the River Otters four straight points and clinch the team victory.
 
Makoni closed out Frances English 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 2, winning all seven points in the second-set tiebreaker. The final two matches required extra play. Anna English dropped the second set to Bean Lowe at No. 3 before recovering to win 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the lone three-set match. Mignogna needed a second-set tiebreaker at No. 5, defeating Pearl Buck 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to cap the 7-0 result.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Five of six singles matches ended in straight sets.
  • Curry dropped just one game across two sets at No. 4, the most lopsided singles result of the afternoon.
  • Lewis & Clark has won 14 straight matches against Puget Sound dating back to the spring of 2014.
