Women’s Tennis Rolls Through Singles to Down Willamette

Anna English and Alex Mignogna go 2-0 to lead River Otters in win.

SALEM, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis defeated Willamette University 6-1 on Sunday afternoon, winning all six singles matches after dropping the doubles point.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First-year Alex Mignogna and sophomore Anna English each went 2-0 to lead the River Otters in another strong team performance against the Bearcats.
 
Willamette claimed the doubles point by winning two of three courts. The Bearcats took the first result at No. 2, where Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer defeated juniors Maya Curry and Emma Loucks 6-4. English and Mignogna answered at No. 3, topping Grace O'Steen and Alicia Sola 6-4 to even the round. The deciding match at No. 1 went to a tiebreaker, where Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty edged senior Susanna Anand and junior Charlotte Makoni 7-6 (7-5) to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
 
The River Otters responded by winning all six singles courts. Makoni posted the first result, defeating Beyrouty 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 to level the overall score at 1-1. Mignogna followed at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sola to put Lewis & Clark ahead 2-1. Anand then defeated de Crinis 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 to extend the lead to 3-1, with each of the first three singles results finishing in straight sets.
 
Curry clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lief at No. 4, giving Lewis & Clark a 4-1 advantage and its third consecutive conference win. The final two matches required extra play. English dropped the first set to Spencer at No. 3 before recovering to win 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) in a super tiebreaker. Loucks completed the afternoon at No. 6, dropping the opening set to Katie Briggs before winning 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) to close out the 6-1 result.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
 
  • Anand moved to 5-0 in dual matches this season and 9-1 overall.
  • Both three-set matches ended in identical 1-0 (10-6) super tiebreakers.
  • Since 2015, Lewis & Clark has won 18 consecutive matches against Willamette and the last nine by a combined score of 69-6.

The River Otters return home Saturday to host Whitworth University at 11 a.m. in the L&C Tennis Dome.
