Men’s Tennis Falls to Caltech, No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer on Road Trip

Arnav Bishnoi and Wade McDermott picked up Lewis & Clark’s first doubles win of trip in loss at No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer.

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark College men's tennis team dropped a pair of 7-0 results on Saturday, falling to Caltech in Pasadena and No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer College at Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont to close the second day of a Southern California road trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
LEWIS & CLARK vs. CALTECH
 
Caltech claimed the doubles point with three wins in the morning session. Sophomore Arnav Bishnoi and senior Wade McDermott fell 6-4 to Constantin Cedillo and Tejas Ram at No. 2 in the first completed match. Seniors Landon Cronin and Spencer Loucks pushed No. 3 doubles to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (2) to Michael Gao and Jan Safrata. Junior Noah Sutin and senior Kai Wills lost 6-4 to Eric He and Andrew Zabelo at No. 1.
 
The Beavers swept singles in straight sets. Bishnoi fell 6-0, 6-0 to Ram at No. 3 to open singles play, followed by Sutin's 6-2, 6-1 loss to Cedillo at No. 1. McDermott dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to He at No. 4. Wills fell 6-2, 6-4 to Zabelo at No. 2, Cronin lost 6-2, 7-5 to Gao at No. 5 and Loucks fell 7-5, 6-0 to David Jin at No. 6.
 
LEWIS & CLARK vs. #15 POMONA-PITZER
 
At Pomona-Pitzer, Bishnoi and McDermott earned Lewis & Clark's first doubles win of the road trip, taking No. 2 in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), over Luke Feng and Leo Rocca. The Sagehens still claimed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. Cronin and Loucks fell 6-3 to Neil Chulani and Sam English at No. 3, and Sutin and Wills lost 7-5 to Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati at No. 1.
 
The 15th-ranked Sagehens won all six singles matches. Junior Bridger Galyardt fell 6-0, 6-0 to John Wehrle at No. 6 to open singles play, and McDermott lost 6-1, 6-0 to Feng at No. 3. Sutin dropped the first set 6-1 to Goldman at No. 1 and pushed the second to 7-5. Junior Max Furman fell 6-3, 6-1 to Chulani at No. 5, Loucks lost 6-2, 6-3 to Ethan Zou at No. 4 and Wills closed the afternoon with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to English at No. 2.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
 
  • Bishnoi and McDermott's tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles against Pomona-Pitzer was Lewis & Clark's lone victory across 18 total matches on Saturday.
  • Cronin and Loucks played the closest doubles set of the morning, pushing the No. 3 match to a tiebreaker at Caltech before falling 7-6 (7-2).
  • Sutin's 7-5 second set against Goldman was the tightest singles set of the afternoon against the Sagehens.
  • Lewis & Clark inserted Furman and Galyardt into the singles lineup against Pomona-Pitzer. Both made their first appearances of the season.
