Women’s Tennis Storms Back to Edge Occidental 4-3

River Otters won four straight three-set singles matches to erase 3-0 deficit in California.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis defeated Occidental College 4-3 on Friday evening at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to earn a road victory in Southern California.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Occidental claimed the doubles point with victories in all three matches. Greta Nagy and Ellise Jay defeated senior Susanna Anand and junior Charlotte Makoni 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Nicole Anderson and Catelyn Isman won a tiebreaker over juniors Maya Curry and Emma Loucks 7-6 at No. 2 doubles. Lilia Tanabe and Macy McClellan completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory against first-year Alex Mignogna and sophomore Madi Vianzon at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Tigers pushed their lead to 3-0 once singles play began. Anderson defeated sophomore Anna English at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3. Vianzon then fell 6-1, 6-4 to McClellan at No. 6 singles.
 
Lewis & Clark responded by winning four straight three-set matches. Makoni earned the first point for the River Otters at No. 2 singles, defeating Jay 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
 
Curry followed with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Isman 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to pull the River Otters within one point.
 
Lewis & Clark tied the match when Mignogna won at No. 5 singles, outlasting Tanabe 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) in a third-set tiebreaker to make it 3-3.
 
Anand clinched the victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Nagy 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4 to secure the 4-3 win.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Anand moved to 2-0 at No. 1 singles and improved to 6-1 overall this season.
  • This marked the second straight 4-3 victory for the River Otters.
  • The third set of No. 1 singles was tied 3-3 before Anand won three of the final four games.
