Maack, a sophomore transfer and Portland native finished first among all Division III runners at the Ash Creek Collegiate Meet in Monmouth, Ore, with a time of 18:53.6. At the 2400-meter split, he was running in 40th place. He sat at 39th when he completed 4K of the race and then moved up 11 more spots to end the 6k course. Most of the 90 runners at Ash Creek were Division I and II competitors, while Maack finished 28th.
