Women’s Lacrosse Records First Shutout in Program History with 22-0 Win Over Pacific Lutheran

Six River Otters scored as Lewis & Clark recorded largest margin of victory in program history.

PORTLAND, Ore. – First-year Ala Cross scored a career-high seven goals and added three assists for a career-best 10 points as Lewis & Clark College women's lacrosse recorded the first shutout in program history with a 22-0 win over Pacific Lutheran University on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Cross led all players in goals, points, shots (14) and shots on goal (10). She scored three of her goals on free-position attempts. Sophomore Aviana Gonzales added four goals and a game-high five assists for nine points. Junior Finley Allen scored three goals with two assists for five points, and junior Sage Swegle contributed three goals and one assist for four points.
 
Sophomore Mack Searle scored three goals and won five draw controls. Senior Kate Meinhard finished with two goals, five draw controls and four ground balls. Junior Kaedance Stubbs collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
 
Four goalkeepers split time in 15-minute shifts. Sophomore Kaitlin McRae started in goal. First-year Phoebe Labuhn played the second quarter, first-year Merrick Loeffler handled the third and junior Zoey Hamel-Hyland closed the game with one save on the only shot on goal Pacific Lutheran recorded in the fourth quarter.
 
Lewis & Clark scored eight goals in the first quarter. Searle opened the scoring on a free-position shot at 14:15. Gonzales scored 31 seconds later off a Cross assist to make it 2-0. Swegle, Cross and Allen each scored over the next six minutes to extend the lead to 5-0. Allen added a man-up goal at 4:25 after a Pacific Lutheran yellow card. Cross scored at 3:27, assisted by Gonzales, and Swegle closed the quarter with a goal at 2:23 for an 8-0 lead.
 
The River Otters added six goals in the second quarter. Swegle scored 11 seconds into the period off a Gonzales assist. Gonzales scored at 12:50 off a Cross assist, and Cross added an unassisted goal at 11:54 before converting a free-position attempt at 7:54. Searle scored at 3:43, assisted by Allen, and Cross closed the half at 0:23 off a Gonzales assist for a 14-0 lead at the break.
 
Lewis & Clark scored twice in the third quarter. Meinhard converted a free-position shot at 12:01, and Cross scored at 1:16 off another Gonzales assist to make it 16-0.
 
Six fourth-quarter goals completed the shutout. Allen scored 14 seconds into the period after forcing a turnover. Searle, Gonzales, Cross, Gonzales and Meinhard each scored over the remaining minutes as Lewis & Clark finished with 22 goals on 38 shots.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • The 22-0 result marks the first shutout and the largest margin of victory in Lewis & Clark women's lacrosse history.
  • Hamel-Hyland recorded the lone save for the River Otters with 8:27 remaining as the Lutes managed just one shot on goal.
  • Meinhard surpassed 150 career draw controls; her five against the Lutes give the senior 154.
  • The River Otters outshot Pacific Lutheran 38-4 and held a 25-13 edge in ground balls.
  • Cross, Gonzales, Allen, Searle and Swegle each recorded a hat trick in the game.
