Men’s Tennis Tops George Fox 6-1 in Conference Home Match

Five River Otters went 2-0 in largest win over Bruins since 2017.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College men's tennis defeated George Fox University 6-1 in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at the L&C Tennis Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Five River Otters went 2-0 on the day as seniors Wade McDermott and Kai Wills, junior Noah Sutin, sophomore Arnav Bishnoi and first-year Kaden Sigurdsson won in both doubles and singles to lead Lewis & Clark to its fifth NWC win of the season.
 
Lewis & Clark opened the match by sweeping the doubles round to take a 1-0 lead. Two of the three matches required tiebreakers. Sutin and Wills posted the first result with a 6-3 win over Ikuho Ebisu and Zach Moore at No. 1. Senior Spencer Loucks and Sigurdsson earned a 7-6 (7-3) win over Aiden Cruz and Keita Shoji at No. 2. Bishnoi and McDermott completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) victory over Luis Hernandez and Joseph Vece at No. 3.
 
Leading 1-0 entering singles play, Lewis & Clark won five of six matches. Sigurdsson recorded the first singles result with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Moore at No. 1. Bishnoi followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hernandez at No. 4 to extend the lead to 3-0.
 
Wills secured the match point at No. 3 with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Ebisu that included a second-set tiebreaker. George Fox earned its lone point at No. 5, where Cruz defeated Loucks 6-0, 6-1.
 
Sutin dropped the first set at No. 2 before winning the final two for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Shoji in the only three-set match of the day. McDermott closed the afternoon at No. 6 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Vece to complete the 6-1 final.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
 
  • The River Otters earned their most decisive win over the Bruins since an 8-1 victory on March, 19, 2017.
  • Sigurdsson has won two straight matches at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
  • Sutin improved to 7-1 in NWC play and 7-0 at No. 2 singles with his three-set victory.

Lewis & Clark travels to the University of Puget Sound on Saturday for an 11 a.m. Northwest Conference match.
