Men’s Basketball Rallies From 14 Down, Falls at Linfield

Yitgit Arcan scores 15 as River Otters trim deficit to one in final minute.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Junior Yigit Arcan scored 15 points off the bench, but Lewis & Clark College men's basketball could not overcome a 14-point second-half deficit in a 58-53 Northwest Conference loss at Linfield University on Friday at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Arcan shot 7-of-9 from the field and added five rebounds, three assists and five steals. Senior Andre Treadwell scored 11 points off the bench on 5-of-13 shooting. Junior Joe Brown finished with eight points, including two 3-pointers.
 
Senior Justin White gave Lewis & Clark a 2-0 lead with a layup 28 seconds into the game, but Linfield took control with a 15-2 run. Chase Bennett scored eight points during the stretch, including a driving layup that made it 17-4 with 11:59 left in the first half.
 
The Lewis & Clark bench responded with a 9-0 run. Junior Jammial Hicks Jr. started it with a putback layup. Arcan followed with a fast-break layup off a steal and a free throw to make it 17-9. Sophomore Donovan Beard converted a driving layup, and Arcan completed the run with another fast-break basket off a steal to pull the River Otters within 17-13 at the 10:25 mark.
 
Linfield's Garrett Callsen scored 12 first-half points to keep the Wildcats ahead. Brown's 3-pointer and fast-break layup trimmed the deficit to 25-22 with 4:29 remaining, but Linfield closed the half on a 9-4 run. Callsen's fast-break layup in the final seconds gave the Wildcats a 34-26 halftime lead.
 
The deficit reached 14 at 42-28 on a Callsen jump shot with 14:43 left in the second half. Lewis & Clark answered with an 8-0 run. Arcan scored on a putback, Treadwell converted a jump shot off a steal by sophomore Darius Wilcher, fellow sophomore Marcus Bast drove for a fast-break layup, and Arcan added another basket to make it 42-36 at the 11:41 mark.
 
Brown's 3-pointer with 7:31 remaining cut the lead to 48-44, but Linfield rebuilt it to 54-46 on a Kohsuke Fujiwara layup with 5:16 to play.
 
Lewis & Clark scored seven straight to close within one. White converted a layup to make it 54-48. Treadwell hit a fast-break 3-pointer with 1:46 remaining to pull within 54-51, then sank a turnaround jumper with 57 seconds left to make it 54-53.
 
Dayton Magana answered with a driving layup to make it 56-53 with 33 seconds left. Fujiwara sealed the result by converting both ends of a one-and-one with 17 seconds remaining.
 
Callsen led all scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Fujiwara finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Magana added 12 points and three steals.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
 
  • Lewis & Clark's bench outscored Linfield's reserves 33-28. Arcan and Treadwell combined for 26 of those points.
  • Senior Taien Jackson played in his 100th career game against the Wildcats and scored four points with three rebounds, a steal and a block.
  • Lewis & Clark outscored Linfield 20-6 in points off turnovers and 18-6 in fast-break points.
  • Treadwell scored all 11 of his points after halftime.
  • Beard tied Arcan with a team-high five rebounds.

Lewis & Clark hosts Willamette University in a win-and-in game at 5 p.m. on Saturday for Senior Night. The River Otters will honor seniors Khalil Glover-Dodson, Taien Jackson, TJ Muhammad, Andre Treadwell, Kody Uyesugi and Justin White before the game.
